WomenWorldCulture Directory of Editors
In order to support writers, WWC is seeking book editors who will work directly for the authors as consultants. Editors will not be employees of WomenWorldCulture.
WWC Editorial Services for Writers:
- Feedback reviews of 2-page samples of author’s work for a $25 fee
- Ongoing editor support for full book manuscripts (with recommended and/or negotiated fees for editor services).
Book editors are sought who wish to join the WWC Directory of Editors. Being a member of the Directory of Editors is a membership benefit for which there is no additional fee to the editor. The fees paid by an author for ongoing editor services will consist of a one-time $25 service fee paid to WWC plus a recommended hourly editor rate of $25 to $40 an hour or $3.00 to $6.00 a page for which we ask editors to work as a condition of participating in the Directory of Editors.
An important aspect of an editor’s job involves developing a constructive relationships with an author. The cost of the editor’s services depends on the type of editing to be done.
What Types of Editing Are There?
Different types of editing come with different challenges and difficulties. Some types of editing are more involved than others. There are three main types of editing:
Proofreading
This is the easiest type of editing. Proofreading is about getting rid of the cosmetic errors. It is usually the last step in the writing/editing process. It’s not meant to be comprehensive; when you are proofreading, you shouldn’t be re-working text, or re-arranging content. Proofreading is about doing a last run-through to catch surface problems with the content.
Copy editing:Copy editing is about improving style, formatting, and accuracy. Copy editing is about making sure there aren’t inconsistencies, and that the style flows well — in addition to being grammatically correct.
Levels of copy editing: light, medium, and heavy.
- Light copy editing might consist of double-checking accuracy and taking care of most grammatical issues.
- Medium copy editing includes heavier lifting, such as correcting flow and re-working some of the text.
- Heavy copy editing--the editor might re-structure some paragraphs, or heavily correct style, flow, and grammar.
Content editing
In content editing, the work is much more intensive. It might add things that were left out, or re-write sections of content. This takes copy editing to the next level, and can include some level of content creation along with making corrections.
The first job of the author and editor is to figure out which type of editing will be done. The harder the work, the more the editor will should charge. The goal of agreeing on the type of editing to be done is to have an arrangement which is fair to both author and editor. The editor will help the author produce a more professional product.
What does it take to be a WWC editor?
A college education is required for most editing jobs. Although it is possible for someone who demonstrates strong writing and editorial skills to train on the job, a bachelor's degree in English, communications or journalism is often a prerequisite for one seeking to become an editor.
Book editors help an author plan, coordinate, or edit content of material for publication. An editor may review proposals and drafts for possible publication. Working as a book editor can provide a path to two career options. An editor can help authors develop publishable manuscripts by checking their drafts for grammatical errors and how the story flows. Editors can also work at a publishing house performing a variety of duties, for example, reviewing book proposals and sample chapters to decide whether the publishing house should purchase the publication rights from the author. Editors may decide the type of fiction and nonfiction that appeals to readers. However, before independently or for a publishing house, prospective editors must be skillful and experienced as a book editor.
